See my one piece of driftwood had a large cave for him in the center of it but he has dug all the sides out so he can poke his head out all day ?

The bottom side of this wood is open and forms a cave with the gravel but he has dug out the front on his own , opening it up more

For the cave I had I took a rectangular clay planter that was @ 4"x12" an made holes in two sides one on the short side and one on the long and put it in the corner of my 90 gallon with an air line and bubble stone run in through the drain hole to keep a little water movement going, my eel and my pleco would share the cave with no issues because there was plenty of room
