Do you have another male sword in the tank with him? I need to know this first.
Yup I have one more swordtail in the tank with him but he never seems to attack him :(

He just kept swimming against the current at the top of the tank

I raise swordtails. I have seen this condition many times with males.

He doesn't have to be attacked just intimidated by the other male.

This male should be put by him self. This is where marine salt will help this fish.

I would start with quarter cup of marine salt to 10 gal water ratio. Try to feed algae based flakes.

You need to bring the salt level up slowly over 5 day period. until you get a hydrometer reading of between 1.000 to 1.004.

You can adjust that salt ratio to work in a smaller QT tank.

I have a 95% recovery rate with swords.

This condition is different from Mollie wasting disease.
air supply is needed.

cheap sponge filter will do.

Sorry for that loss since I love swordtails.

For the future. just 2 swordtail males together doesn't work out well.

And dominant females turn into males.

If you put a group of female swords together 1 or 2 will turn into males.

I had 5 females too

I have a 55 gal. it has 30 females 1 dominate Male.

The other males that are in there are his offspring. He keeps all the other males hiding in the grass.

I'm in the process of removing all the males including my dominate one.

He will be replaced with a new lg. bloodred.

When I replace him is when some females will turn to male.

If I don't take the young males out they will get shrunken stomach. This is due to stress.

I only get this problem in a tank never in the pool.

Breeding fish is not with out its problems.

Is this all livebearers or only swordtails? I'm new to swordtails and platies. I've never seen this with my mollies. I've only got one male swordtail and one male platy and they completely ignore each other and the male mollies in my 40 gallon, and my dominant male molly keeps the other male mollies in line, but they certainly aren't afraid of him other than flaring at each other every now and then.

Same thing is happening to my other (and only) male in the tank. Temperature is 30°C (because of ich). His tail seems to be bending upwards and his 'sword' got half in length overnight...shrunken stomach too.

What's causing this?
