Just got a Hex aquarium from an uncle. Not sure how big it is, though. Just wondering is it possible to put a ciclid or pair in it or would a hex be a bit too confining.

Rich is dead on. If it's a moderately small tank (20 gallons) you could easily have a pair of shellies (smaller Tanganyikan cichlid). Unless the tank is very large you'll never be able to have a large stocking density, or variety of cichlids because of the lack of distance to set up territories, but single breeding pairs tend to be much better about fighting over space.

To figure out the volume here's a calculator that I assume works http://www.aquariumlife.net/hexcalc.asp.
