I have an Aqueon 16b that came as a kit from the lfs, current filter is a Whisper 20. The tank is fully planted but also overstocked by choice (lots of low bioload fish). I run the Whisper with an additional sponge (output too heavy) plus my own media bag.

Any suggestions for a filter upgrade?

I would vote an Aquaclear 30. Great brand and I've switched to them exclusively. It's a HOB style, but very quiet and has a low profile. Depending on your tank depth, you may want to purchase an additional intake extension. I did that for my AC50 to make it reach the bottom of my tank.

Here it is: http://www.amazon.com/AquaClear-30-...8&qid=1422501069&sr=1-1&keywords=aquaclear+30

And the extension: http://www.amazon.com/AquaClear-Ext...upplies_5?ie=UTF8&refRID=1KGCGMZHADE4EAD9QD1D

Good luck!

Hello Th...

You don't need to get a bigger filter, save your money. Just change the tank water more often. Filtration systems don't do a good job of cleaning the water, they just take in toxic water and return the water a bit less toxic. A small, heavily stocked tank should get a 50 percent water change every 3 to 4 days to remove the dissolved fish waste before it builds up and makes the fish sick. Don't rely on a filter to keep the water clean, it doesn't.
