Homemade protein skimmer

That's funny about the hippies and power tools. DIY is up to the person obviously. I enjoy it and gives me a bit of satisfaction when things go as planned. Sometimes it's pretty, sometimes not. But always fun to do and learn a little more about the intricacies of what these components actually do. One of my favorite builds is the five foot tall protein skimmer I made. I would never would spend the money needed for that kind of production. I'd need to spend $500-$1000 on something like it. No need to upgrade or change that sucker to worry about resale.
 
I have a 5' skimmer too. It's been running over 20 years. Started out life as a Venturi type, but retrofitted it a few years back with a needle wheel pump. It pulls out stuff my Hydor skimmer misses.
 
I may do that when my pump dies. Hopefully that won't be for years though. Awesome to hear how well yours is doing.
