I've never given the regional thing much thought but it's possible. Everything locally here does contains clay, from low to a fairly high concentration depending on manufacturer.
I personally feel its a poor choice for aquariums due to the amount of time it takes to clean it and the way it compacts, there are loads of better of substrates.
Yeah I know our dirt products here usually have a really high quartz content and people tend to complain about it being a regional thing. Yet no one complains when they go to the white sand beaches, lol.
I agree, playsand is not high up on my list, I'm very partial to the idea of PFS and the prepared sand products even though the latter cost a little more initially.
