How to use aquarium heater.

HOw do I use my all-glass 50 watt heater without killing my fish? Its so confusing! It always shoots the temp up to 84 degrees in an instant! I need the temp to be 76 degrees but can't get the heater to keep it there without gradually climbing. ???

Well depending on the size of your tank...your lights may be raising the temp and the smaller the smaller the tank the faster the temp will change.

how hot is the space its in (do you live someplace hot and its getting direct sun light?)
What is your heater set at?
