Is applying purple up to my tank a good idea

Go natural by all means. I've seen that stuff used and you get more purple than you bargained for. Looks weird to me and TOTALLY unatural.

True. If you don't have the patience for coralline, then you won't have the patience needed for a successful and healthy reef tank.
 
You will always favor one type of algae. If you work to make that algae coralline you will get it.

If calcium or alkalinity is limiting coralline you need to test for both and add individual supplements as needed. Simply adding magic mixes will not work out nearly as well.
