Java moss question

i was just wondering why Java moss is so expensive. my lfs is selling it for $8 for enough to cover about a 3" x 2" area this seems a little expensive. what is a good price for Java moss, and how fast dose it grow?

I got a piece about the size of 2 50 cent pieces for 1.99 or 2.99 can't remeber. It grows like a weed if you don't remove some of it every once and a while.
