HI everyone,

The time has come that we're going to have to frag our beautiful leather. It has grown too much & is sticking out of the water in a couple of places. The question is, how can we go about fragging a few pieces off it to preserve the leather?

How big can we make the frag pieces so that it would grow if we were to sell/give them out?

You may want to grab yourself a copy of Anthony Calfo's Book of Coral Propagation. It's actually pretty straight-forward to frag a leather.. just cut around it about an inch or so thick (so you end up with a donut-like shape), and then cut that into 1"x2" pieces. If you have reef putty you can make little discs out of it to use as a base for attaching each frag.

There are a few other details that I can't remember right now like stuff to add to help the leather heal, and keeping good flow etc.. it's all in the book.

i was actually fortunate enough to sit in an anthony calfo lecture and where he talked about how to frag certain types of coral and then actually fragged them for us. when he fragged the leather, he basically just sliced and diced it into a bunch of pieces and that was it. just have a sharp razor blade to make the cuts as clean as possible, stich the cuttings to a rock, and put them in an area area with good water current and they will grow. he even cut the stalk in half vertically and said that every part of the leather will heal and grow, and not to throw any part of it away.
