Making wood soup...

I bought some wooden pieces at a LFS today and I'm boiling them per the instructions on the label and posts here.

GOD, IT STINKS!

I don't know how I am ever going to get that tanin smell out of the house!

It will go away. Just an overpowering earthy smell. lots of odors far worse.

Next time toss it in an empty dishwasher .. set to hot ...w/out soap of course.

Okay, I opened all the windows of my house last night and this morning it smells just fine.

The water was very brown after 3+ hours of boiling.

I placed the wood into buckets of fresh water this morning so see if they will turn the water red/brown by the time I get home from work. If it looks clear I think I'll place them into the tank tonight.
