Male juvenile german blue ram acting odd

My co-worker just texted me and he's worried about his juvenile blue ram acting strange. His ram is currently hiding out in a cave underneath some driftwood just hovering there breathing yet his ammonia and nitrites are at zero and his nitrates are at ten. He doesn't have a water hardness test, the rams fins aren't clamped either. Could it be that it's just his territory? As the only other ram is a female.
 
Unfortunately not, he got home from work and it became a meal for his mystery snail
