So I have the Marineland ML90609 Portrait Aquarium 5 gallon. Like most Marineland filters it uses their rite size filters. Is there a way I don't have to use that filter and could use or make something instead? I hate using them because they don't do a good job for what I'm using the tank for. And get clogged in a matter of days instead of weeks.

I am not specifically familiar with that filter, but you can use a frame if the others come with it and wrap a piece of bulk filter around it. Slide it into place or use some zip ties to hold it on if needed or sew it with natural cotton thread or fly tying or fishing line.

You might also use a prefilter sponge on the filter to catch a large amount of the muck/debris and clean that every few days.

What are you doing that is soooooo messy?
