Yes, that's the one I have and it's great! I'm not sure about the heater question. I don't use a heater in my Eclipse, but that's only because it is at work and the temp doesn't fluctuate there really. I've checked the temps many times. If I had it here though, I would use a heater.

My guess is that it would be fine to use a heater, I mean, I've seen acrylic tanks ranging from 5-50 gallons, surely all those people aren't keeping coldwater tanks. A 25 watt heater would be good for 5 gallons.

My current betta acclimated for about 45 minutes with no problems. However, the betta I had before that acclimated that long to a 10 gallon tank, and still didn't live very long. It is possible that your poor guy was sick when you got him, you can't always tell. :(
 
Yes the heater can be used in Acrylic. The heat dispursed from the heater will not get hot enough to melt the tank in any way.
