When it is recommended that a certain type of fish should be kept in schools, is it OK to mix and match different varieties of that fish to make up the school, or is it better to keep them the same? Does it depend on the fish type/variety?

For example, for a school of 6 danios, is it OK to have 3 zebra danios and 3 celestial peal danios? For a school of 6 barbs, is it OK to have 2 denison barbs and 4 cherry barbs?

Thanks!

I think, for the most part, like will only school with like, but fish that shoal will kind of stick together. For example. black neon tetras won't school with regular neon tetras. But different forms of tiger barbs (green, albino, etc) will shoal with one another sometimes.
