The hardness will tell us the buffering capacity. The higher the pH, the higher the hardness should be. The lower the pH, the lower the hardness will be. This is in most cases, but there are those situations with high pH and low hardness. The hardness needs to be above the baseline to keep the pH stable. This will help determine what kind of fish will be best suited for your tank.
