Need help on picking the right filter

I have a 36 gallon bow front I believe. Im getting to where I'm about ready to fill my tank with water but I was given a very small filter for the tank and a very large one that I had to throw out due to it being caked in sand on the inside. I know the small filter pump will not be enough and im very unsure of what type of filter pump I should buy. All advice and tips are welcome!

I would be looking for something rated double your aquarium size. My preference is cannister filters if your tank and cabinet can accommodate one. Maybe a Fluval 307 or Eheim Ecco Pro 300.
