do i need a protein skimmer on a 20 gallon long if i am going to have just inverts and maybe 1 fish and no corals?

No, you can change the water frequently to remove doc. About 4-5 gallons every week or two of well mixed (24hrs) seawater would be good.

bgen cant begin to explain the benifits of a skimmer and once ya either buy one or make one your self ya will never want to go with out one !! even for a 20 gallon it helps alot !!
