Where did you get your lighting from? / How much was it?

It's an aquasun dual bulb fixture, picked it up for about $80 at my local petco.

The rams dug a small hole.... Maybe it's a precursor to spawning!

what is your water like? when we had rams we got to see this 2 or 3 times. our pH was too high. saw eggs but they never hatched. i do wish you the best of luck. they are beautiful fish.

PH holds at 6.5-6.8.
