You have to be carefull 5 GAL doesn't give to much lay way. Tetras maybe some Cory's or a beta.

Pygmy cories, micro rasboras, pair/trio of smaller killies, cherry red shrimp, or gertrude's rainbowfish.

Cichlids in a 5g? You're dreaming. A 5g is good for a shrimp tank and maybe for a few of the smallest fish. You'd need a 20g to house the smallest of cichlids properly.

With the pygmy cories, micro rasboras, or gertrude's rainbowfish you could probably have 4-6. Please note the OR in that sentence. Your best bet is to choose only one variety since you are dealing with such a small aquarium. If you want to go with the shrimp, then I would recommend starting with a dozen and having fun watching them breed.

2-3 guppies might work in there. I have 6 in a 7 gallon and they get on well.
