Unless you have purchased some good lighting. Some low light stuff like java fern would be good. It's hardy and shouldn't be planted but attached to drift wood or rocks. Some African cichlids will just dig up plants in the substrate or eat them.
Yea fake plants is the way to go with cichlid, but if your going Lake Malawi which it seems you are, i always prefer that look...not many plants and mostly rocks. I like the main plant you have in there already. Just more rocks/caves.
And those yellow tail acei's are gorgeous, I've been looking for some at my LFS but no luck yet
