If the water softener is old and nasty, it may be part of your problem. Seachem also makes a filter medium called Matrix which allows the anaerobic bacteria to colonize it, and is supposed to help with nitrates.

I'll be doing another test on my water today since i bought a bah to put in with my job filter from API. I'm hoping this helps me out cuz if it doesn't then I'm buying me a few plants.

Yep- misquoted. It's normally 10-20 ppm (orange) but the 5 plants I put in last night have already brought the Nitrate down to 5 ppm.

Thats good! Just for your information, the master test has the same orange color for both 10 & 20. On the individual test, this color orange result is 10 ONLY so your tap is likely testing @10 which is the legal limit for public drinking water supplies. Not sure why API has different color charts for the master chart & individual test chart.
