i have a freshwater tank the ph is at 6.i want it to be at 7. i have tried 1/2 water change,ph up,alkaline buffer, to no avail ph remains at 6 to 6.4. the tank has a funky smell

Take a bucket of source water.
Wait 24 hours with aeration.
Then test it for GH/KH & pH.

What are you using for buffering alkalinity?
You may also need some calcium (reads as) GH powder.

Try agitating the water? C02 will change the pH
Look at pH KH co2 triangle.
It’s all related.

Hello Geo...

If you're like most of us who just keep fish you can get at the local fish store, you don't need to worry about the pH, hardness. alkalinity or any of the other chemistry stuff. It's not important for keeping a healthy tank. All you need to do, is treat the water with a product that removes chlorine, chloramine and detoxifies ammonia and nitrite. Seachem's "Safe" is a good product. To maintain the tank water long term, just remove and replace half or more of the water weekly. This will maintain a steady water chemistry and this is all the fish need.
