I've heard that pleco's breed in mud banks, hence why they wont breed in a normal aquarium. I would assume that they can stay out of water for a period of time without too much stress.

i have had that happen before with a common pleco i had years ago. They just need to go terrestrial it seems. when my water gets low (when i am cleaning the tank) my current plecos sometimes stay on the wood that is exposed to the air for about 1 - 2 minutes before they "decide" to go back to the water.

Funny you say this.

My clown pleco has an awesome little hole in my driftwood that he lives in. When I take the wood out of the water to clean under it, he stays in the hole, happy as could be.
