My mystery fish which I believe is a type of barb (orange with black markings like a cherry barb) appears to have popeye on one of it's eyes. Or a white thing on it's eye. very hard to tell. Eating fine swimming with the Julii corys. Was wondering about doing a salt dip. Good idea? Ifso, what are the measurements of salt to water? Thanks for any help you can give!

If it is popeye, it is caused by a bacterial infection. If the eye is cloudy, or white, I'm not sure at this time.

Answer these Qs and hopefully we'll get to the bottom of this!
~What are your tank parameters (ammonia, nitrites, nitrates, temp)?
~ How large is the tank?
~How many fish are in the tank? What kinds of fish are they and what are there current sizes?
~When is the last time you did a water change and vacuum the gravel? How often do you do this? How much water do you remove at a time?
~How long have you had the fish?
~Have you added anything new to the tank--decor, new dechlor, new substrate, etc.?

Bad Eye on Barb

Here goes tank parameters:
as of this a.m. (8-9-04)

29 gallon tank
ph 7.6
Nitrites .25
Nitrates 80
ammonia 0 :D
temp. 77

Fish
6 neons had for several months growing fine
4 black tetras same time as neons doing great
2 Julii corys great fish
2 plecos 1 8inches 1 5inches had for 6 months approx.
1 Barb possibly a cherry but don't know for sure. had for 2 months. He is swimming around fine. Has always hid alot. Likes to chase the corys but does not damage them. Plays tag Have been doing a daily water chage as I think I am overfeeding  Day 3 is today

Day 1 did 25% water change and vacuumed gravel. Nitrites were still high.
Day 2 did a 10% water change numbers better.
Day 3 did another 10% water change .Parameters shown at top of message were before last water change. I had some small seashells in the aquarium and took out as many as I could find. Thought that might help the PH. Also, I have an abalone shell in there which I am going to take out today. Plecos like to hide under it. Perhaps taking out the shells will help on numbers? :?

I took the Barb out of the aquarium for a VERY short time and put it on a wet towel so I could look at the eye. Does not look like popeye as has white allover eye. Wondering about cloudy eye or perhaps an injury.
I will say all fish seem to be much happier with cleaner water.

I also have a 35 gallon tank with 2 plecos and a large silverdollar that I just put in there 2 days ago from the 29 tank and also bought 2 small silver dollar to keep big one happier. They are great fish!!

P.S. Bad eye Barb

I added Novaqua to tank on day 1, one teaspoon, and on day 2 nothing and on day 3, one fourth teaspoon.
