I have a 55g tank and a 29g tank. Both have only gravel and plastic plants. I want live plants, but I don't necessarily want to get rid of the gravel. My question is can I keep the gravel and maybe grow plants in little clay pots or? If so, what is the best way to do that?:banghead:

To my understanding normal gravel will work for a majority of common plants. I have Vals, crypts, swords, Hygro and dwarf sag all thriving in my normal gravel.

Your lighting being adequate is much more of a concern than the type of gravel.

Thanks for your advice. How deep does the gravel need to be? :banghead:

You can use pots if you want, it's actually a nice way to do it because you can rearrange them without disturbing the plants too much. You can also put ferts into the pots or soil or whatever and since it stays contained in there it's less to deal with.
