It's about a week and a half and my puffer is still in hiding does it really take them this long to swim about ?

Puffers are quite well known to sometimes be very shy. Feed very meaty foods to encourage it to come out. Another option is not to feed it for a few days then on day feed it som shrimp and it might come out for food more often.
