Purigen + Carbon?

Has anyone ever used Purigen in a media reactor instead of in a filter bag or canister filter? Right now I have my bulk reef supply media reactor running a mix or carbon and purigen and I'm going to see how the experiment turns out. Also, I've also used GFO (phosphate remover for those unfamiliar with the product) on the freshwater tank in the past, and all the plants started dying. Are phosphates a good thing in a planted tank? Thanks folks
