question about cycling

i have been cycling my 10 gallon fresh tank for about 6 weeks. i was finally almost done where nitrite was back down to zero and the ammonia was barely detectable. i added 2 tbsp of ammonia to keep the bacteria eating. now i am detecting 5 nitrite and 6.0 ammonia. did i just add too much ammonia? also i AM registering nitrates...( i was going to be doing the water change before i put the fish in)

sure sounds it.. don't dose so much for maintenance after the cycle is complete.. perhaps 1-2 ppm
