Have an opportunity to pick up a 36" light for a song and dance. My tank however is 30". What ill effects can I expect if I was to place the light directly onto the cover

That depends largely on the light type. Higher light levels and increased water temperatures from the lamp throwing off heat are possible drawbacks.

It would be on a 56 gallon tank so it's 24 inches deep. Ts a current USA nova extreme light as well. He has a 2 and a 4 bulb fixture
