I never had any success with it in my old SW tank ... I would like to know this; does it need to be touching the glass/other rock etc. in order to spread or will it just randomly appear in different areas? TIA

if you have good flow in your tank it will spread around nicely

Along w/ flow, proper lighting is important. It seems to love, atleast the purple, PC/VHO fluorescents in particular. 3-4 WPG is a good starting point. Along with that good, balanced Ca/Alk numbers are very important. HTH

My sides and back blocked out with pink under 175w metal halides. Another key is spores...grinding up some coralline algae and pouring it back into the tank will help. This is why products like Garf Grunge are effective because it is ground up rock and shells that are covered in coralline.
