Reducing Algae

If you have high lights and fast growing plants could you stop dosing ferts for a week to suck all the nutrients out of the water so the algae dies.
Or will it make it easier on the plants?

Probably cause more algae.

In my experience, three things cause algae: too much light, too little CO2, or not enough fertilizer. Depending on the setup, your issue is likely one of the first two.

Without knowing more about your setup, I we can't really help you any further than that.
