Refuge explanation anyone?

I am new to this life of SW tanks and have started my own in a 55g. What is a refugium and is it REALLY worthwhile to have just starting out? Another question...i have a protein skimmer, hang on back filter, powerheads and undergravel filter, along with LR...is this all necessary or did i overdo it with gizmos?

I'd remove the UGF if at all possible. You have more kinds of filtration going on that you need, and UGF"s are pretty much obsolete in the SW world.

And no, a fuge is not required at all. Merely another optional piece of equipment really. Lots of benefits for sure (like a skimmer), but neither is mandatory.

I would lose the undergravel filter. You will have nitrate problems as dedris is pulled into your substrate.
