Refugium Advice

I am running a 25 gallon tank with a 5 gallon hang on back refugium. I shut off the pump from my display tank to my fuge to do my weekly water change, and when I turn it back on I get a fair amount of detritus and algae particles pumped into my display tank. Any suggestions how to avoid or lessen the damage?

Filter sock? Sounds like some sort of filter for a bit would help.
