Refugium or Sump Only

I am planning to replace my canister with a sump for my FOWLR tank. However, I would like to upgrade to a reef tank in the near future. Is getting a sump/fuge combination necessary or sump only will just as beneficial? please advice?

Definitely add a refugium if you have the room for it. They are excellent for nutrient export and usually one of the two main reasons to add a sump. So unless you have no room for a fuge between your skimmer and pumps definitely do a fuge.
