Sand Substrate Question

How do you clean sand? For gravel, you can use a gravel syphon to get out the muck, but wouldn't sand go up the syphon?

Do you use the same method as for a gravel bottom?

Everyone asks this question; like, for example, me.

I actually just wave my python an inch above the sand kicking up all of the bad stuff. Then I just suck it up. Yes your sand can get sucked up too, but not as much as you might think.

Pool filter sand can be quite heavy. I wave the python above the sand but I can also dig down into it without sucking up the sand providing I lift the python fairly quickly after digging it into the sand.
