Scouring pads?

I know some scouring pads contain aluminum oxide, mainly scotch brite ones. I bought an 8 pack for a dollar at the dollar store, they don't mention anything about aquariums or anything else. Anyone used these with success? I need a cheap mechanical filtration for my biowheel filter, my new red fluorite is killing the filter pads.
