You can get a drop checker for 3$ on ebay. You can get liquid for about 5$ I think, and you have enough for a couple of uses which means a couple of years.
 
Ten gallon
substrate--fine gravel, fine sand, couple cups of sifted potting soil
lighting--two 23 watt CFL
filtration--undergravel filter, internal sump/baffle filter, external canister.
fertilizer--fish poo
~30% WC weekly
cost less than $25, including tank, to set-up.(y)

looks like the rummynose are spawning again this morning.
 
I think my tank looks like crap compared to all these on here haha, pointers would be appreciated.

Anyway this is how It started, 3 jungle vals, and a bunch of eco complete and 1 bag of rocks.

Then here it is now with some java fern and crypts about 3-4 months later.

3.5 Marineland nano. Ecoxotic light, 50W heater, everything else standard.

0.5ml of Iron twice a week
0.5ml of Liquid ferts twice a week
1.5ml of liquid carbon every day, twice on Fridays (this is in my office)

What a nice looking betta! His home too.

Would that be considered high light?

Did you have to work your way up to that level of glut? My first try at excel led to a lot of melting.

Started with 0.5ml every other day. Some of the smaller leaves melted, but now they are doing just fine.

Yes, it is considered high light since I get 80+ PAR at 12".

Dirt from the backyard under the gravel
50% water change every 2 weeks
Root tabs every 2-3 months
Flourish every week

Fish stock:
2 paradise gouramis
4 mollies
2 long fin serpe tetra
3 kuhli loaches
5 neon tetra
5 horned nerite snails

Plant stock:
Amazon sword
Java fern
Java moss
Bronze wendtii crypt
Green wendtii crypt
Red wendtii crypt
Anubias congensis
Telanthera cardinalis

Been up and running for 4 years but just started to actually be successful with growing plants for 2 years ?
