I've heard of some people using oak leaves, as long as they aren't sprayed with anything go get them outta your back yard for free lol

What purpose do they serve again? And brown or green
 
Tannins as well as a place for infusion to happen.

Alder cones and driftwood can serve the same purpose as far as tannins go. Oak leaf litter is found in several places that I collect natives at.
 
So all in all they also lower PH.. Hmm.
 
Indian Almond Leaves (IAL) aka Cattapa Leaves.
These work also. You can get them online.
I got mine from a seller on The Planted Tank.
I use them in my Shrimp tanks and for my Corys
