Sick Fish

Hi, I am new to this site and i do not have a lot of knowledge of aquariums. I recently have put 6 cichlids into my tank that has been running without fish in it for about 2 weeks now. The fish started off fine, but now they are gasping heavily for air. I am unsure of what to do. I have 2 filters in the tank (40 gallon) right now. I read that I should do a 25% water change immediately, so I did. It does not seem to be making a difference. They started breathing like this this morning.

What are the parameters? What type of fish??

Hi and welcome!
If suggest a 50% water change followed by another 50% water change. By the sounds of it your tank is cycling and ammonia will be high.

To the OP try and keep one thread on the same topic please. I asked a bunch of questions and tried to figure out your fish issue only to find my efforts have been stalled, It will only help us help you more if it's all in one thread.

If you change the water, buy a test kit and follow the guide it is VERY possible they will be fine during the cycle.
