Hi all i need some advice, I use live plants in my tank and believe they are the cause of my sudden increase of snails in my aquarium. I now know after further research I need to rinse the plants in either a bleach solution or a specialist solution from my lfs before planting them and will endeavor to do so in the future. I was thinking of adding either some assassin snails or yo yo loaches to remove the pest snails am just worried they may start to pick on my golden apple snails. any ideas?

Adding an animal to solve a problem isn't usually advised. Don't over feed and pick out the ones you see. They won't harm anything. You can put a piece of lettuce in the tank overnight and they will be drawn to it. I have 'pest' snails in all my tanks and the populations very easy to control.

Then you'll have an influx of assassin snails instead of unidentified ones. :D

The lettuce or cucumber trick work pretty well- but you're stuck with snails. You could get loaches- it's fun to watch them killem- but they'll never get everything.

Just remember- if you have snails- it's because they're eating SOMETHING, which means less junk/algae in your tank. That's a good thing. ;)

Agree. Sorry this app likes to spontaneously post mid reply. I don't mind a few of the little ones I just want to keep the numbers in check

No doubt. I hate snails. I see their benefit, but I hatem. I have one nerite. That's it for me

I have a couple of golden apples I would be happy to leave it at that in all honesty. I think I will just have to pick the pests out as I see them. I have got all the ones I could see as of today but I am sure more are lurking

My first inclination was to recommend yo-yo loaches if this was a thread asking how to get rid of those pesky snails. Now that I see you want them gone, I am STILL going to recommend yo-yo loaches as I have experienced what they can do first hand. My tank was severely overrun back when I was about 12-13 years old and would overfeed my fish. I was throwing away 75 snails in the morning and at night each day (29g tank) for 10 days before I decided to add these loaches. I added 2 after doing one final cleaning where I removed 250+ snails. There were still many more snails that I didn't remove because I wanted to see if they would do their job. And boy did they! In 3 days not a SINGLE SNAIL was crawling on the glass of the aquarium and the bottom was littered with empty shells. They work spectacularly and these aren't a fish that will impact much else in the aquarium. They are good with all types of fish and they stay on the bottom of the tank. I disagree with adding something else to solve a problem because of this perfect example. It's MUCH easier to remove 2 loaches one time than it is to remove countless dozens of snails each day. I don't think that they would eat your larger snails, but just as a precaution I would home them in a gallon milk jug or another tank until the loaches do their job. Then add one to the tank and see how the loaches react to it before deciding whether or not to add the others. You can always get rid of the loaches when you are done with them, but I have a feeling you will like them and will want to keep them.

I don't recommend assassin snails because they don't reproduce fast enough to make it worthwhile. And they will only reproduce when they have other snails to feed on, so you don't have to worry about their population getting out of control. That is one of their benefits.

Wow that was a pretty severe problem you had. Thanks for your advice. At the moment I'm only picking out a few at a time but if it gets worse I will definitely be considering the yo yo's

I have been doing a bit of research and I think I may have to invest in the yo yo's just because they look ace! If they keep the pest snail count down as well that's a bonus :p

Yeah I did a bit of reading on them and figured about 5. I have to ask a question though most people on here use gallons for tank size can I ask is that the us or uk gallon?

I think most of us are in the US so we use US gallons. At least, I do. I think very few use UK gallons. It's usually liters (you might say litres) or US gallons.

Thats cool i figured that may be the case but wasn't 100% and didnt want to start getting it wrong :)

Hi guys.
Is there any one out there that can advise regarding apple snails? I'm concerned that they may not be enough calcium in the water as my snail shell appear thin towards the opening

I tend to add cuttle bone for birds in my tank for apple snails, I just let it sink to the bottom of the tank in back of decorations so I can't see it. I also feed them veggies once in a while that contain calcium.
