DEFINITELY take into consideration the food your fish will eat. Many foods will kill shrimp if they contain copper and/or effect the ph the wrong way.
I've heard bettas do really well with shrimp; betta will consider the top few inches his/her territory, and the shrimp, of course, will dominate the bottom. My tetras do really well with my shrimp.
My amano shrimp is eating up all the smaller ghost shrimp. I didn't know I had an Amano shrimp- the pet store sold it to me as a ghost shrimp. I had to look up why it looked different, and I found my answer! Hope yours are harmonious for you.
