so just a quick update..my 55 gallon has 50lbs of dry rock and 40 lbs dry sand enroute to me..my plan is to get another 7 lbs of live wet rock from my lfs to seed as well as a couple cups of live sand from one of his established tanks to seed, protein skimmer is on it's way to me as well..my quarantine tank is up and cycled...currently housing 2 peppermint shrimp, 1 turbo, 6 astrea snails...they've all taken to their new home rather nicely..the peppermints also got rid of my aptasia which i was pleasantly surprised about considering it's hit or miss with them...they also look like they're dancing when they're standing around...quite amusing to watch..

i am noticing a thin film on the surface of my water...is that normal?

That thin film is a protein film. You can point your PH at it, or just wait for your skimmer which will take care of it.
