So I'm going to be starting a 6G Fluval Edge nano tank, and am unfamiliar with what will be need for tank maintenance aside pwc's, algae scraping and filter cleaning. I see some amazing aquascapes with plants rooted in the substrate and it makes me wonder how one goes about vacuuming the substrate and cleaning the features such as stumps, roots and rocks? Is the idea just to provide the right balance so that the plants outgrow the algaes? Could you give me some info on cleaning a densely scaped tank, as that is my goal.

Usually in heavily planted tanks, you don't vacuum the substrate, just take out an replace the water. I've heard plants use the gunk stuck down in the substrate for food.
