I have a 48 litre tank three mollies and well now four tetras :) I checked my water shortly before the passing and it was fine apart from a mild sign of ammonia but nothing major at all. The next day one passed! Why did it die?

Any ammonia is bad, I'm not sure how many gallons that is but if its less than 10gallons your probubly over stocked. Next time they test your water ask them for numbers. I would do a water change with fresh conditioned water.
EDIT: Also a stable ph is much better than messing with it. So unless its below 6.0 I wouldnt mess with it.
