Can't help you about freshwater... never done it!

I'd say it's a false positive, but it's easy enough to find out - mix up a batch of saltwater WITHOUT using Prime, and test as you've done in the past. My hunch is that you won't find any ammonia.

I've also done a little research and found that Seachem's Reef salts do seem to report ammonia when a lab tested a bunch of salts recently. But we're talking levels like 0.03 ppm - levels that at least my kits won't even see.
 
I use the Seachem Marine Basic test kit with the little yellow discs. My LFS said that seachem told them that since my tank is still new i will have a trace of amonia. but once it is established better the amount of amonia from the salt will be eaten up very very quickly.
