I love thermal compacts..they are hard to set but reliable as hell!
I have the 25 watt model in tanks as small as 3 gal minis with no fluctuations.
Some of the pre-sets I have allow the tanks to get too cool. But they don't fluctuate and that is always a good thing. I notice the automatic Ebos allow the tank to get cooler too.
in my opinion overkill can be a bad thing on a heater. haha. i stick to the 5 watts per gallon rule. has worked great on the 3 different tanks ive had. so on that 55 gallon i would actually go for the 300. just my opinion though.
