My tank has been running fully cycled for about 3 months now. I do 25% PWCs every week... But I've yet to dare to clean the actual filter housing for the HOB filter, or my sponge filter (since it took me so long to cycle in the first place). I'm getting ready to do this tomorrow and want to confirm what to do and also what not to do so I don't harm the beneficial bacteria

Does this process sound right/safe?

1-fill bucket with tank water
2- take filter media out of HOB and sponge out tank
3- swish both in bucket to remove debris
4- rinse HOB filter housing with tap water
5 - reassemble all and place back in tank

Also My HOB is an aqeon 30 and there are a couple blue plastic pieces that fit into the housing and look like they may grow BB bacteria. Prob best to only clean those with tankwater? Thanks

That makes sense. Thanks for the tip!

All filters should open with a release button....or just a good tug.......once you have opened it u need to take the sponge out and wash it.......however u have to use the water from your tank to clean it not from the tap!
Hope I helped

Alight think I pulled it off without incident this morning Mumma and Fishlove. Thanks for the reassurance and tips!
