To hot?

I got african cichlids and i was looking at them at pets mart and i noticed on the tag that the temp is 72-74. my tank is at 82 to hot?

No, 82 is fine. 80 might be a little more preferable, but 72-74 is too cold for most tropical fish.

Goldfish like cooler temps but cichlids like it warmer.

My tank gets up to 80 with the lights on. All the fish seem just fine.

You must realise that the lakes of africa are vast areas of water, There are some fish of africa that do like the colder temp because they come from the deeper parts of the lake. I myself have always kept my african cichlids around about the 79 degree mark and have no trouble at all with my fish and they breed quite readily.
