I have a new 10gl that I want to try a real plant. I want something that looks topical and will grow out of the top of the tank because I'm not putting a cover on it. I'm hoping for a low light, no fertilizer, super easy beginner plant. Any ideas?

Don't know many plants that grow out of the tank! I had bacopa once in a lidless 5g tank, it grew way above water! Other plants that grow high (not out of the tank), easily and fast are vallisneria, hygrophila, etc... Very undemanding plants! Hope this helped :)

Tropical? lucky bamboo for sure. I have a bunch of the curly ones in a vase in my fishroom. Depending on the size of the one you get you may need to prop it up with something to keep the leaves out of the water.

Another great plant to grow that way is pothos. Just take off any leaves that are under the water as they will rot. However the plant will send out roots and can grow almost indefinetly in water. It comes in a lime green form, a yellow and green form and a green with white splotches and a newer variety that has even more white on the leaves. I think it is called jade and pearls. Walmart sells it as well as home depot or lowes or about anywhere they sell plants. It grows as a vine with heart shaped leaves. Alison:)
